Alto Adige Schiava Lago di Caldaro Classico DOC

Alto Adige Schiava Lago di Caldaro Classico DOC

The Schiava grape has been cultivated in South Tyrol since the Late Middle Ages. Up to the mid-1980s, it was the predominant variety in the region. Since then, increased interest in white wines and full-bodied reds has led to a downturn in the area under cultivation.
In the past, two areas proved to be particularly suitable for the Schiava grape: the Santa Maddalena hill north of Bolzano for a full-bodied, full-flavored wine and the area around Lake Caldaro for a more playful variety with softer fruit flavors.
In the early years of our winery, Schiava was absent from our range of wines. But the decision to clear an 80-year-old vineyard in the neighborhood gave us an idea: We took cuttings from the best of the Schiava vines and planted them in our own vineyard. Today they deliver the grapes that form the basis of our Schiava – together with a few percent complementary varieties (Negrara, “Gschlofne”, etc.) which were blended with the wines on Lake Caldaro in the past and today are minor components in the Schiava DOC.

Alto Adige Pinot Nero Riserva DOC

Alto Adige Pinot Nero Riserva DOC

In the 1960s, my uncle Ignaz Niedrist (1911-1992) decided to permit himself a special luxury: He planted a biggish plot with low-yielding Pinot Nero vines for the expressive wines that they produce. As the sites proved to be highly suitable, and the variety and the wines became increasingly popular, it was decided to plant even more. Today Pinot Nero is the main variety in our range of red wines.

Alto Adige Pinot Nero vom Kalk DOC

Alto Adige Pinot Nero vom Kalk DOC

A few years ago, we started planting Pinot Nero in the clayey calcareous soils in Appiano Monte. The combination of soil, variety and cool climate is proving advantageous for the vines. Pinot Nero wines from this site are designated "vom Kalk", meaning "from limestone".

Alto Adige Lagrein Gries Berger Gei Riserva DOC

Alto Adige Lagrein Gries Berger Gei Riserva DOC

My marriage brought not just me, Elisabeth Berger, to Oltradige but also a tub of ripe Lagrein grapes from my parents’ winery. As the built-up area of Bolzano has spread, Berger Gei is one of the few old wine estates still surviving in the former village of Gries. It is planted exclusively with the autochthonous Lagrein vines. My family has grown this unique grape variety over many generations. The annual vinification of the grapes in autumn is always a special occasion for me.

Alto Adige Merlot Mühlweg DOC

Alto Adige Merlot Mühlweg DOC

Twenty years ago it was time to replant one of our vineyards. As it occupied a very warm west-facing slope and a general rise in temperatures was becoming apparent, we decided to plant Merlot, which ripens somewhat later. Our intuition did not let us down: The variety made excellent progress and, with an additional planting of Cabernet franc, delivers expressive results.
